Qualification Packaging Rules

The Certificate IV in TESOL is an English teacher qualification at the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) level 4, designed specifically for adult learners who want to teach English to speakers of other languages either in Australia or overseas. Graduates of this course will meet minimum TESOL specialist qualifications requirements for entry-level teaching positions. During the course you will develop basic skills in classroom presentation techniques, lesson and resource preparation, and classroom management. You will gain the knowledge and skills to assist learners to improve their grammar, pronunciation and speech, and you will also develop an awareness of cultural issues likely to be encountered with English language learners in different countries. This course also shows you how to use a range of TESOL teaching methods to assist learners to develop and improve their reading, writing, listening and speaking skills; how to develop tasks or tests to assess language learners; how to assist learners to prepare for language tests such as IELTS, TOEIC or TOEFL; and how to use computers to enhance learning.

Unit Description

TAEDEL401 Plan, organise and deliver group-based learning

This unit provides the skills and knowledge to plan and organise lesson content and activities, and resources specifically for the group of learners you will be teaching. It also provides the skills and knowledge to deliver lessons using effective presentation, communication, observation and interpersonal skills. It also shows you how to support and monitor learning and evaluate the effectiveness of your lessons


TESCUL401 Develop and apply knowledge of cultural factors affecting TESOL teachers


This unit discusses a range of cultural factors that affect EFL/ESL learners and how to deal with them. It shows you how to communicate effectively and cope with different cultures.

TESPRN402 Assist learners to improve pronunciation and speech

This unit provides the skills and knowledge required to assist EFL/ESL learners to improve their pronunciation and speech. The topics covered include phonemic symbols, intonation, rhythm and stress, and sound production.

TESGRM403 Assist learners to learn or improve grammar

This unit provides the skills and knowledge required to assist EFL/ESL learners to increase their knowledge of grammar and to use grammar correctly. It also shows you how to identify and correct errors, and find suitable grammar resources.

TESRES404 Source and develop resources to support learning

This unit provides the skills and knowledge required to find and/or design, develop, use and review resources to support EFL/ESL learning for learners with different language levels.

TESRED405 Assist learners develop reading and writing skills

This unit provides the skills and knowledge required to assist EFL/ESL learners develop or improve their reading and writing skills. You will learn how to assess learners’ skills and use a range of activities to help them improve.

TESSPK406 Assist learners develop speaking and listening skills

This unit provides the skills and knowledge required to assist EFL/ESL learners develop or improve their speaking and listening skills. You will learn how to assess learners’ skills and use a range of activities to help them improve.

TESASS407 Assess language learning

This unit provides the skills and knowledge required to develop and/or use tests and activities to assess language learning in an EFL/ESL context. It also teaches you how to provide effective feedback to learners, and how to record, review and interpret test results.

TESMTH408 Apply a range of TESOL methodologies

This unit provides the skills and knowledge required to plan English language skills development and use a range of TESOL methods to meet the needs of your learners. You will also think about and discuss your own teaching performance.

TESTST409 Assist learners prepare for English language tests

This unit provides the skills and knowledge required to assist EFL/ESL learners to prepare for a range of different English language tests. You will research the English tests that are most appropriate for your learners and source activities for these tests.

TESCAL410 Use computer assisted language learning to assist learners

This unit provides the skills and knowledge required to use Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) to assist EFL/ESL learners. You will learn how to locate and evaluate CALL resources and include them in your language lessons.

TESBUS411 Teach business English (elective)

This unit provides the skills and knowledge required to help EFL/ESL learners to communicate effectively in an international business environment.

TESCHD412 Use creative strategies to assist children to learn English (elective)

This unit provides the skills and knowledge required to assist children learn English by using creative strategies involving music, drama, games, sports, arts and craft, and/or media. You will learn how to locate and evaluate activities, and use them in your language lessons.
